Smashing Pumpkins were decent

For my, um, 21st birthday... Carol bought tickets to see Smashing Pumpkins at the Charlottesville Pavillion. Thanks baby! I hadn't seen them for a good 14 years. I saw them back when they were touring for the Siamese Dream album. They were great to see live then, so we figured they'd be cool to see again!

We loaded AJ up and dropped her off with the grandparents and headed up there (about an hour from Richmond). Doors opened at 6, band was supposed to go on at 7p, we got there at 7:30p and waited until 8:30 for them to go on. Woa. We were out later than we expected. The venue was great, we were able to get pretty close to the band. They served Star Hill beer, awesome. I'd say a couple thousand people, mixed ages. I did feel a little old considering I was 22 the last time I saw them.

They played mostly stuff from their Zeitgeist release, which is a bit heavier than Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie. They played a few of the good old songs, "Cherub Rock", "Tonight, Tonight" and "Bullet With Butterfly Wings", made fun of "old people" (like me) who just want them to play the old stuff and then finished out the night with Pink Floyd's "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun"... a very long 20+ minute jam session. We left towards the end of that, I love Floyd and all but that wasn't the best pick. We heard them start up "We only come out at night" for the encore.

The above older songs were great to see live again and made the trip worth it. We listened to Siamese Dream on the way home to finish out the night. We picked AJ up a little after midnight and were home, exhausted, by 1am. Not bad for old married folks with a 3 month old. :)
